About

Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900)

Irish poet and playwright, who wrote poems and essays about Keats, including ‘The Tomb of Keats’ and ‘Keats’ Sonnet on Blue’. In a letter to Richard Monckton Milnes (Lord Houghton, Keats’s biographer) Wilde described Keats as ‘a Priest of Beauty slain before his Time’. Wilde proposed the erection of a monument to Keats and opposed the sale of the love letters from Keats to Fanny Brawne.
