Originally published in 1979 and reprinted to become part of the Penguin Modern Classics series this year. Emecheta was a prolific Nigerian author who wrote a total of thirteen novels, earning her an OBE. Her writing explores themes of motherhood, femininity, slavery and freedom. 'The Joys of Motherhood' focuses on a woman from the Ibo village in Nigeria who is unable to conceive in her marriage. As Nnu Ego cannot fulfil her role to provide sons for her husband's lineage, she is sent away to Lagos. As war fractures society and Nigeria is pulled between traditional values and colonial influence, Nnu must find her identity between motherhood and independence.   Come along on 6th October at 6:30pm to discuss this modern classic over biscuits and a glass of wine!
